Milah Persson, Topi Lehtipuu & David Wilson-Johnson. Salzburger Bachchoir & Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, Ivor Bolton. BBC Music Magazine, July 2007, Mor. elease Date: 16th Apr 2007. David Wilson-Johnson (baritone), Miah Persson (soprano), Topi Lehtipuu (tenor). Recorded: 20-22 October 2005. Recording Venue: Salzburg Mozarteum, Grosser Saal. Part I: Introduction: Die Vorstellung des Chaos (Raphael, Chorus, Uriel).

The split between the grand old-fashioned symphonic performance of Haydn's The Creation and newfangled historically oriented interpretations is increasingly blurred by the emergence of modern conductors and players who have taken advantage of the insights of the historically minded contingent. This new recording of Haydn's The Creation, recorded in German, is a completely mixed bag that may make a fine contemporary choice for listeners whose comfort zone doesn't extend far into the e realm.

Miah Persson (born 27 May 1969 in Örnsköldsvik) is a Swedish soprano, active internationally and in recordings. Miah Persson grew up in Hudiksvall, singing in choirs and taking part in amateur drama productions. After studying social sciences and law at university in Stockholm, she undertook musical studies at the Kulturama, Operastudio 67 and, from 1996, at the University College of Opera also in Stockholm. She made her operatic debut as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro at Confidencen in 1998.

I am the author of "Joseph Haydn and the Classical Choral Tradition" (Chapel Hill, NC: Hinshaw Music, 1996). This is now my modern-instrument reference recording of Haydn's Creation. The contributions of the Mozarteum Orchestra and the Salzburger Bachchor are top notch, and the leadership by Ivor Bolton is superb. But Miah Persson also does beautifully. When she pairs up with the solo flute, terrific! And the tenor is good too. The brass players use "natural" valveless instruments here, so it's not a modern instrument performance. But the playing of the Mozarteum ensemble is so steeped in echt Viennese classical style that everything they do sounds just right.

Current as of June 2018. Ivor Bolton is chief conductor of the Basel Symphony Orchestra, artistic director of the Teatro Real, Madrid, chief conductor of the Dresden Festival Orchestra and conductor laureate of the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, with whom he appears annually at the Salzburg Festival and on tour, including at the 2006 BBC Proms. With the Mozarteum Orchestra, he has also built up an extensive discography, including a critically successful series of recordings of the Bruckner symphonies. In the UK he has been music director of English Touring.
