Ram Narayan (IPA: ; born 25 December 1927), often referred to with the title Pandit, is an Indian musician who popularised the bowed instrument sarangi as a solo concert instrument in Hindustani classical music and became the first internationally successful sarangi player. Narayan was born near Udaipur and learned to play the sarangi at an early age. He studied under sarangi players and singers and, as a teenager, worked as a music teacher and travelling musician.
Ram Narayan began to record music when he played on three solo 78 rpm gramophone records for the British HMV Group in 1950 and recorded an early 10 inch LP album in Mumbai in 1951. Over the following decades Narayan had numerous solo recordings published. Narayan's gramophone records and LP recordings are out of print. Three LPs were rereleased on CD: Volume 1, a partial rerelease of Ram Narayan en Concert, in 1989, and Inde du Nord in 1998 and Raga Puria Kalyan in 1999

Pandit Ram Narayan took up the challenge of reviving the Sarangi and affording it the status of a solo concert instrument. Inspired and encouraged by his admirers, like Yehudi Menhuin, Pablo Casuals and Rostropovich, Pandit Omkarnath Thakur, Krishna Rao Shankar Pandit and others, Ram Narayan's dedication brought him success and rich acknowledgement in the field. Pandit Ram Narayan's name is synonymous with Sarangi today. Ram Narayan's contribution to Indian music as a pioneer, performer and teacher has made him a legend in his own lifetime. The Mishra Bhairavi presented in this album can be played at any time of the day. Bhairavi is a light classical raag usually used to conclude a concert. There are many variations to this raga and it is a prerogative of the artiste to induce the many moods this versatile raga offers.
Recorded live in Stockholm in 1974, this album originally came out as the Amigo LP Raga Puria-Kalyan and was reissued on CD as simply Pandit Ram Narayan in 1999. The album consists solely of the extended raga "Raga Puria-Kalyan," which Narayan uses a vehicle for some passionate, soul-bearing introspection. Narayan is accompanied by tabla drummer Suresh Talwalkar and tamboura player Hans Isgren, both of whom serve him well during his heartfelt performance.
