Was (Not Was) is an American pop rock group founded by David Weiss and Don Fagenson, who adopted the stage names David Was and Don Was. They gained popularity in the 1980s and early 1990s. Weiss and Fagenson were childhood friends who grew up together in suburban Detroit. Partly due to Fagenson's poverty they decided to form Was (Not Was) in 1979.

It was a night like this forty million years ago I lit a cigarette, picked up a monkey skull to go The sun was spitting fire, the sky was blue as ice I felt a little tired, so I watched Miami Vice. I walked the dinosaur, I walked the dinosaur. Open the door, get on the floor Everybody walk the dinosaur Elvis landed in a rock-rock-rocket ship Healed a couple of lepers Ah, and disappeared. But where was his beard?.

Was not" is more formal but "wasn't" is acceptable in most spoken registers and many written. I wouldn't use the contraction in scientific writing (the only real formal sort I do). In news or business letters it would be a matter of how formal you were trying to sound. Sometimes the uncontracted form can sound official or even officious. You may or may not want to do this

They need not be prescient. One of the most prominent of US ambassadors, Joe Kennedy, father of Jack, reported to President Roosevelt during the war that the British had little chance against the might of Nazi Germany.
