As the Liszt series draws to a close we turn once again to the many alternative thoughts which the composer had on so much of his output. Though many pieces here are the initial versions, much of beauty was often discarded in Liszt's later revisions and these pieces are fascinating as a trace of the creative thought process. Of major importance here are what are probably Liszt's last, previously unpublished thoughts on his cycle Historical Hungarian Portraits (this discovery explained in great detail in the booklet notes) and for virtuosity fanciers, the brilliant Clochette Fantasy. Many of Liszt's piano works are not original compositions but rather transcriptions of other composers' music. Nonetheless, Liszt generally influences these works to such an extent that they become his own. This is especially true in the case of the operatic paraphrases
FRANZ LISZT (1811-1886). A celebrated Hungarian pianist and composer, and an innovating genius of modern piano technique, Liszt was the son of a steward in the service of the Esterházy family, patrons of Haydn. He was born in 1811 at Raiding in Hungary and moved as a child to Vienna, where he took piano lessons from Czerny and composition lessons from Salieri. Two years later, in 1823, he moved with his family to Paris, from where he toured as a pianist. In addition to original piano music he also made many transcriptions of the work of other composers and wrote works based on national themes. The violinist Paganini was the immediate inspiration for the Études d’exécution transcendante d’après Paganini, dedicated to Clara Schumann, wife of the composer Robert Schumann, and based on five of Paganini’s 24 Caprices for solo violin and the last movement of his Violin Concerto No. 2 (‘La campanella’).
Liszt became the first musician to have fans ladies swooned and wanted to meet him it was no longer just about the music! Liszt never married but instead worked his way through a revolving door of girlfriends He had three children with Countess Marie dAgoult, who wrote novels under the name Daniel Stern. They broke up in bitterness and she wrote novels satirizing him. In 1848 he withdrew from performing at the height of his fame to concentrate on composing.
