Substrata is an ambient music album by Biosphere, released in 1997 by All Saints Records. It is considered to be a classic ambient album, consistently in the top 5 in surveys on the Hyperreal ambient mailing list. Biosphere's first truly ambient album, it has a theme of cold, of mountains and glaciers and running water. Sounds of howling wind and creaking wood, although infrequently employed, create a chilling soundscape interrupted by sonorous but quietly suspenseful music.

Substrata 2, also written as Substrata², is a double album by ambient musician Biosphere which was released on 6 June 2001. The first disc is a remastered version of Substrata, and the second disc is a soundtrack for Dziga Vertov's 1929 film Man with a Movie Camera, commissioned by the Tromsø International Film Festival in 1996, plus two bonus tracks from the Japanese version of Substrata (the last two tracks). The cover image is a photograph of Taormina railway station, Sicily.
The album recalls the more abstract moments of Global Communication's ambient works, as well as the glacial expanses of Jenssen's 1996 collaboration with Higher Intelligence Agency, Polar Sequences, and is quite easily among his most accomplished, satisfying works to date.

Substrata - Студийный альбом от Biosphere. Вышел 21 октября 1997г. В альбом вошло 32 треков. Продолжительность альбома: 03:05:11. Times When I Know You’ll Be Sad. 03:44.
The layered quality of this album is pretty amazing, with both synthetic and natural sounds interwoven again and again into an aural tapestry that can only be described as desperately haunting. This album easily matches the best ambient from giants like Steve Roach, and in many respects, I think this album does Roach one better. Not a "noise" album at all, Substrata has bona fide musical composition; just of a sort so odd and out of the ordinary that an untested ear might not recognize it at first.
