Wars of the Roses is the eighth studio album by the Norwegian experimental collective Ulver. The album was produced by Ulver, with John Fryer and Jaime Gomez Arellano, and issued in April 2011 via Jester Records and Kscope, preceded by a single, "February MMX", in February. Wars of the Roses is the first album to feature new member, British composer and t Daniel O'Sullivan (Æthenor, Guapo, Mothlite).

Wars of the Roses takes you on a very focused journey, and once again, it feels like Ulver have crammed several hours of ideas into an ultra compact, 45 minute serving. When you are finished with it, aeons have passed, and yet, no time has passed at all. This is intense, magickal music, and it finds Ulver at the top of their class. I could not imagine listening to individual tracks on this album, as it is best digested as whole. I have listened to it several times already, and indecently it also helped sedate me through a recent funeral, where in the past couple of years, Shadows of the Sun was my sustainer in sadder times. I dunno, I kinda expected exactly what was presented.

Ulver - February MMX (from Wars of the Roses) from Kscope on Vimeo. Ulver would like to officially acknowledge: Martin Hilstad (Director), Torbjørn Sæther (Photo) and Martin Rotmo (Producer/FX) from Norges Kreative Fagskole and Arve Buhaug (Actor) for their diligent work on this Matrix-esque adaptation of February MMX' Ulver, Olso, May 2 2011. Produced in association with Norges Kreative Fagskole, Trondheim.

Wars of the Roses is another worthy entry into the Ulver discography. The album achieves a fine balance between the more guitar-driven sound of Blood Inside and the atmospheric elements of Shadows of the Sun, Ulver's previous two albums. However, it is neither as densely layered as the former nor possesses the evocative flow of the latter. The album derives its power from being extremely varied, as it is comprised by far-reaching sonic experiments.

Over more than a decade and a half, listeners have learned to expect the unexpected from Ulver, who started out as a Norwegian heavy metal band but have turned far more experimental.

Wars Of The Roses is a music studio album recording by ULVER (Post Rock/Math rock/Progressive Rock) released in 2011 on cd, lp, vinyl and/or cassette. Although I will be the first to say that the album is slow to grow on a listener, Ulver has made a great album with 'War Of The Roses,' although at times it may be a little too mellow and drawn out for its own good. With 'February MMX', Ulver begins their latest work off on a surprisingly upbeat note, an atmospheric rocker that introduces 'War Of The Roses' on a somewhat misleading note.

Essentially Wars Of The Roses stands as a companion piece to Shadows Of The Sun. Where Shadow. as warm and subtle, the new album is colder and more starkly portrayed. Much as the artwork of Shadow. eflects the warm shades of melancholy contained within, so does the beautiful, minimalist black and white art of War. eflect the clarity and extremity of emotion contained within. Ulver have once more played a confidence game on us all with this album, the shining, shimmering sounds they toy with serving to distract us from the deeper undercurrents of unsettling emotional turmoil beneath. And I’m all for it. Subtly and quietly this record worms its way into your soul, fooling you with a shining surface belying the hidden depths beneath, so that one is surprised to find that the water is so deep and cold, the emotional current so strong, that you have to struggle hard to stay afloat.
