Tom Baker and Louise Jameson are in top form for two top stories, giving their characters the same energy they had back in 1977 and making the most of the excellent scripts with tremendous performances. These were obviously & productions in audio terms, with huge scripts and large and excellent guest casts, and this gives a truly epic feel to both adventures. The Ghosts of Gralstead is a six-part story over three cds. The Doctor and Leela are in Victorian England, but this time they’re not in the London of Jago and Litefoot. Rather, in the year 1860, it is a time of miracles and marvels – science and medicine march alongside apparent miracle cures.

Philip Hinchcliffe was producer of Doctor Who from 1975 to 1977. He also novelised stories. Louise Jameson reprised the role of Leela on screen in the 1993 charity special Dimensions in Time. Leela's life on Gallifrey has been explored in various spin-off media. Tom Baker disliked Leela's character concept because he felt that she was too violent. Jameson reports that he was cold to her for the first several stories they did together. Eventually, during the filming of Horror of Fang Rock, she insisted on multiple takes of a scene in which he repeatedly entered the scene early, thereby upstaging her. This incident appears to have increased Baker's respect for her, and their working relationship substantially improved thereafter  . The Ghosts of Gralstead.

Doctor Who manages to re-invent itself constantly. When ideas start to stagnate, a new writer comes in, does something revolutionary, and everything starts anew. The funny bit is that the ones who were most innovative, the ones who took chances, the ones who ‘ruined Doctor Who,’ are the ones who will be remembered the most. Innes Lloyd, Philip Hinchcliffe, Barry Letts, John Nathan-Turner, Russell T. Davies, Steven Moffat. But let us not forget Sydney Newman and Verity Lambert. Doctor Who. lt; . - The Devil's Armada. 3. The Helm of Awe . 2. The Genesis Chamber. Philip Hinchcliffe, acclaimed producer of Doctor Who (1975-77) returns to tell new stories for the Fourth Doctor and Leela. The TARDIS has landed on a human colony world. In the city, where the inhabitants rely on advanced technology to create their children, a marriage is due to take place. But not everyone supports it, and a crash might just prevent it for good. In the commune outside live the savages, shunned and detested by the city folk. But they have recently been visited by a man, charismatic and handsome, who may yet be their saviour - or their doom. - The Ghosts of Gralstead.

Pictured above: producer Philip Hinchcliffe with actors Louise Jameson and Tom Baker, who, of course, played companion Leela and the fourth Doctor. It was a huge coup for the BFI to secure Tom Baker, Doctor Who legend, earliest surviving Doctor and fabulous raconteur, so there was wisdom in having a smaller panel than usual at these monthly events. Also in attendance, however, were Anneke Wills (1960s companion Polly), and Brian and Sadie Miller, husband and daughter of Elisabeth Sladen, who died almost exactly two years ago. Before her latterday success with The Sarah Jane Adventures, Sladen.
