The Parliaments – (I Wanna) Testify. Released in 1967, (I Wanna) Testify is a feel-good slice of Detroit soul that became one of the most enduring entries in the P-Funk canon. The track was later reworked in 1972, after The Parliaments became Parliament and a more funked up Testify landing on the Up For The Down Stroke tracklist. It’s still a staple of the raucous c live experience, five decades after its creation. Funkadelic – Mommy, What’s A Funkadelic? The opening track of Funkadelic’s debut album asks a worthy question. The leading lyric of If you suck my soul, I will.

Parliament was originally the Parliaments, a doo-wop vocal group based at a Plainfield, New Jersey barbershop. The group was formed in the late 1950s and included George Clinton, Ray Davis, Fuzzy Haskins, Calvin Simon, and Grady Thomas. Clinton was the group leader and manager. The group scored a hit single in 1967 with "(I Wanna) Testify" (co-written by Clinton) on Revilot Records.
(I Wanna) Testify" is the first hit single by the Detroit soul singing group The Parliaments. The single was released at the beginning of the summer of 1967 by Revilot Records. The single went to on Billboard R&B chart and on the Pop chart. It would be the only major hit for the group for the entire decade. The only member of the Parliaments to actually appear on the recording was group leader George Clinton, as the group was based in New Jersey at the time and only Clinton was able to travel to Detroit for the session. The recording was rounded off by session singers.
