Testify: The Best Of The A&M Years. Testify: The Best Of The A&M Years. Hailing from a background steeped in Gospel, Al Green came onto the scene in the early 1970s. A consistent hitmaker and the embodiment of all that is both holy and secular, Green's career marked a popular return to grassroots soul music. The simple arrangements put the musical focus squarely on Green's silky cries, sensuous moans and breathtaking falsetto. In the late '70s a series of events led Green to reevaluate his career and his faith, and he decided to leave the world of secular music. He turned to preaching and became an ordained pastor. Of all the male soul artists Al Green is the one that was possessed of the finest, clearest voice, the voice of an angel. Green made is first recording with his father’s gospel quartet back in 1960 but he took a R&B musical direction and joined a group called the Creations in 1964 and later Al Greene and the Soul Mates.
The closing track on Green’s 1973 album Livin’ for You is disconcerting and unsettling, though it appears mellifluous and warm. If Green’s best songs explore the tug of war between the soul and the flesh, Beware seems to show the consummate lover warning us his motives may not be honourable. You can choose to hear the song as just another come-on, or you can hear it as the opposite – a call to be on the alert for people who might manipulate you for their own ends. There’d been the occasional highpoint in Green’s post-Belle discography, not least the two albums he made in the early years of the 21st century after reuniting with Mitchell, but Lay It Down fulfilled Questlove’s ambition. Co-producer James Poyser and Questlove approached the task determined to honour Green’s 1970s work without attempting to just simulate the sound.
Al Green's voice suits everything he sings. The obvious hits are a must for any collection, but, if you know songs like For The Good Times - you know; the one we normally associate with Perry Como, well, you ought to hear how Al covers it. Incredible. There's so much stuff on this double album, and not a bad tune amongst the whole 42 songs included. If you like Al Green, you will not go wrong with this excellent collection. This album brings me back to my teenage years, when love was a dream and I hung off my boyfriend's promises of love forever. Unfortunately he lied but Al Green's music still makes me feel love again.
